Newsletter: January/February 2013 Welcome to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) University of Hawaii at Manoa Student Chapters website. The student chapter provides a great opportunity to develop relationships among civil engineering students. As well as providing the students the ability to get a better understanding of their field of study through speakers from the civil engineering profession and from engineering related activities, such as concrete canoe and steel bridge. It also provides members a chance to serve the community through various events. This has been an exciting 2012-2013 school year. We began with an awesome summer lending a helping hand at The Engineering Alumni Association of the University of Hawaii (EAAUH) and ASCE golf tournaments, along with a fun filled social at Magic Island. This fall semester we have launched both our concrete canoe and steel bridge projects along with preparations for PSWC 2013. Members have also been involved with various service projects in Mililani, on the UH Manoa Campus, and Lincoln Elementary School. It would be nice to have you join us as we continue through this school year.
Our student chapter is involved in various community service projects such as the Mililani Make-A-Difference Day. We painted over walls that had graffiti in order to beautify the scenery and help the community eliminate graffiti from the area. We also hold socials throughout the fall and spring semesters in order to keep the camaraderie of the CEE's strong! This may include hanging out and playing volleyball/basketball, going to football games, or going to the beach. There are many other things we may do as well. There is a conference held every spring where schools from our region, Pacific South West, come together and compete against each other. May it be sports, engineering, ingenuity, or creativity the fun never stopped! This past year it was held at Cal Poly, Pomona, and this coming spring at the University of Southern California and Loyola Marymount. We hope to see you there. If you're interested in one of these things or all of them, contact us at asce@hawaii.edu or any one of the officers. The officers will be happy to answer any questions you may have about our club or activities! Holmescoming 2012 This year, the Engineering Alumni Association of the University of Hawaii (EEAUH) held their annual Holmescoming event on November 9th. The event encourages local companies and professionals to attend a night of fellowship and to indulge in exquisite catered food. At ASCE's booth, we presented our annual projects: Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge with fun mini games of "Canoe Quarters" and "Clumsy Jenga". Student volunteers gained from the opportunity to serve food and beverages along with providing directions to the event. We are always thankful for the contributions that are made to the College of Engineering and for our members who volunteered. |
